Turkish food

Located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, Turkish culture is shaped by its deep roots in the Middle East, Anatolia and the Balkans stretching over 12,000 years. Many people don’t know this, but Istanbul is one of the largest cities in Europe, alongside cities like London and Moscow. Known throughout history as Byzantium and Constantinople, Istanbul was once the capital of the Roman, Latin and Ottoman Empires.

Turkish food has evolved over hundreds of years and has been influenced by and influences the cuisine of many countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Bordering Asia and Europe, Turkish food brings together elements of Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines.

Turkey runs along the Mediterranean Sea and is blessed with a wonderful climate and rich soil. Fresh seafood and produce is plentiful and Turkish food is renowned for its use of local, seasonal ingredients.

With Turkey’s urbanisation, the cuisines from the regional areas have been integrated with Istanbul’s traditional food – the result is a rich and diverse cuisine renowned around the world for its textures, aromatic spices and wonderful flavours.
